What am I getting myself into?
The commitment to encounter is a commitment to life (Goizueta, 2010). It is in these committed encounters that we become compassionate, bringing one another’s face into view. As a bi-racial Latina therapist, I believe we are created for relationship, and that these relationships are formed within culture, gender, sexuality and socioeconomic and political contexts. They have potential to bring joy, heartache, struggle and more.
I once told my therapist, “Why didn’t you tell me this was going to be so hard and so good?!”
My approach to counseling is eclectic. My worldview begins with cultural connectedness, and is inclusive of gender, and social constructs which are both disruptive and move us towards healing. I am trauma-informed. The work of therapy addressing trauma and related behavioral struggles is to co-create, therapist and client together, a safe place, a context for change, to challenge the client’s patterns and expand realities by engaging the client’s skills and resources.
